Sharing Eggs Hatching

1 to 4 of 4

Apr. 23

There's nothing more exciting to kindergarten than chicken eggs hatching. This is an annual event at our school and it is tied neatly into the curriculum. Last year we started sharing this with the parents and anyone else who wants to watch via video streaming. This is a great way to extend the classroom. Many parents reported that their child eagerly sat with them at the computer and explained the whole process.

Last year we used Yahoo video chat. The problem was, parents had to sign up for a Yahoo account and install Yahoo Messenger. It definitely worked but it involved many steps.

This year we are using Ustream.tv. I signed up for a free account and created a channel called "eggcam". I set up a webcam and within minutes we were "live". Anyone can view without the need to install software or sign up for an account.

Now we just need the chicks to hatch!

Cheers,

This is kind of funny...I have the live camera stopped currently. It seems none of our eggs are going to hatch! This is the first year this has happened. Tomorrow, we are bringing in some "stunt chicks" so the kids can see baby chickens. I'll turn the camera on when the replacements are in place.

Cheers,
Mark

How cute! I bet this is a really fun event for all involved. Great use of a webcam.
