We start off the year with games and songs. We start with a steady beat and may use accompaniment. We can also have each student rhythmically recite their name and we repeat it. We get the students moving and singing and then we will have a mystery song to let them compare to the songs we have been singing. I try to show them patterns in music and lots of times I am explaining about math, science and history and language all are part of the musical experience.
