first day of school...

1 to 2 of 2

Oct. 16

As a high school teacher, on the first day I get to meet my 125+ students.

During the first class of each course I have the students do a scavanger hunt in their textbook (to find all of the resourses in the textbook). While they are doing the activity I come around to each student and take their photo. I then print their photos, write their names on the back of the photos and use the photos as flash cards to learn all of their names for the second class.

I believe in leading by example. I tell them that my homework is to learn all of their names. Just like they have homework, I have homework...and I get my homework done. I learn everyone's name for the second class by using my "photo cards". Then I hang all of their photos on the wall of my classroom.

If someone is part of your family, then you have pictures of them hanging in your house. The students have joined my family of learners and they need their pictures in my room.

Nobody cares what you know until they know that you care.

Wow...I have so much trouble learning names. I could never learn that many in one day!
