The best way for teachers to motivate student learning is for the teacher to be passionate and enthusiastic about the subject matter. Motivation is contagious. Teachers who are enthusiastic and energetic about both teaching and learning can generate that motivation in students. Teachers can also motivate students by convincing students that they can master new learning by relating new information to prior student learning and demonstrating how learning the subject matter relates to students' lives and career aspirations.

An assignment I gave to my chemistry students early on in the year, was to assign them an element and have them do an "animoto" on it. I gave them a list of information they had to provide about each element. They really had fun with this and several students said they had made quite a few animotos for themselves.
Animoto for education is free for 6 months- go to www.animoto.com/education/ for more info.
