With this project, third graders gain an understanding of life two generations ago. After writing to their grandparents to ask them about their childhood years, the students create a presentation comparing and contrasting their lives to that of their grandparents at the same age. They learn to incorporate digital photographs, sound files and a family tree using the organizational chart in PowerPoint®.
"When the students present their projects to a classroom full of grandparents, there are smiles, laughter, and tears as the generations come together."
Patricia Fitzgerald, Cascade Elementary School

Whilst this topic is classified under Language arts and Technology, I think much more could be made of the historical aspect. In particular research tools for genealogy and local history could be introduced more effectively e.g. local newspapers. Children have a curiosity about the past which needs to be nurtured. By all means encourage Language arts and Technology but do not forget the history.
