Students learn about ratios and a healthy diet, and then use the internet, Microsoft® Excel® and graphing calculators to collect data. The students analyze their favorite foods and their school menus and make recommendations to the principal on some healthier foods to include on those menus. With this project, students learn to use technology to apply mathematics to real-life situations.
"Since completing this project, the students do not think about food choices in the same way. Initially, they chose junk and fast food as their favorite foods. They now see the value of eating more fruits and vegetables."
Dr. James Telese, University of Texas at Brownsville
