This project provides a refreshing alternative to "textbook problems" for students reviewing geometry concepts. Students use latitude and longitude data to calculate the distance between area landmarks. They apply conversion factors to convert the distance to miles, and they then apply the distance formula. By choosing landmarks that form a right triangle, students can review coordinate properties of right triangles.
"This project definitely met my goal of providing a review of geometry concepts in a way that is engaging to the students. The students got a real kick out of seeing their home addresses on the map - especially the immigrant students who looked up their home cities in Bosnia, Afghanistan and Thailand."
